You are in charge of the conduct of this class. Expect more chaos than you are used to; I will not lecture unless you ask me to do so. I am here to facilitate your learning. There will be review sessions before quizzes and exams which will ensure that you are confident about all terms and concepts.
You will work in pairs, responsible for coordinating a topic or activity, and checking each others written assignments. Teams will be adjusted if necessary.
Class coordinators have a weekly leadership role in cooperation with the professor. Normally two will be assigned to each week.
Class coordinators will normally do their written assignment on a subject related to the cases they present, but are not required to do so.
The class will decide as a group how they want the class coordinators to work. The decision will take the form of basic rules, which we will revisit at week 3 to confirm that they are working for everyone.
Several functions are required, which coordinators will divide between them:
Each week, class coordinators will discuss with the professor how to prune and focus the potential list of activities for the week, and how to divide them between the three periods (or fewer, in some weeks). Based on the resources provided by the professor or found by class coordinators or class members, some areas will be of more interest than others, and class coordinators can influence the timing and sequence of the activities.
How do you prepare for your class coordinator role? Start early. Think of it as an opportunity rather than an assignment. Look at the weeks that precede it, where it fits (Next up from the previous week and Introduction for the week in question). Do the readings well in advance, look at the learning objectives, and discuss with classmates. What do you really want to know about? What is exciting, interesting and different? What will affect your life and career? What would you want an expert to talk about? What knowledge or experience would they have and where would you find them? Who can help make the connection (start with me, but think wider).
Each class will consist of a series of activities that will require you to work with each other in pairs or groups. You will contribute to decisions about content, resources, and evaluation, within the limit of the commonality policy.
Class coordinators will work with the professor to ensure students are confident that they understand concepts and terms and their application to the study of international relations.
Additional resources are provided for each week. My aim is to provide you with more than you might read, but also to tempt you into reading more than you intended. If you come away with a list of books to add to your reading list, I will have succeeded! In most cases, full chapters will be put up on Moodle for “in-class” use.
We will use Moodle as a continuous discussion forum, with a separate page for each week. This will allow you to ask questions and post notes for each other throughout the semester, and fall back on the additional materials in order to study for the quizzes and exams.
Quizzes are worth 30 percent of your mark. This relies largely on memory, and tests your mastery of the vocabulary and concepts necessary to discuss international relations. The weighting reflects that fact that POE116 is a first year course, although you may be taking it in a later year. Lists of terms are attached to the Exam review page, and review sessions are available on demand prior to quizzes and exam.
